Why investigate Ellen’s testimonies?
The idea of testing whether or not Ellen G. White was a prophet might seem scary. It might seem that way because looking to critically investigate her life and teachings might appear to be making room for doubt. We certainly don’t want to be unfaithful to the Lord.
But the Bible encourages Christians to test the prophecies.
“Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:20, 21).
Now that’s more than an encouragement. It’s a direct command. We’re actually commanded to investigate the prophecies.
Ellen’s challenge to us
Ellen herself challenges us see if her testimonies are from the Lord.
“God does nothing in partnership with Satan. My work for the past thirty years bears the stamp of God or the stamp of the enemy. There is no halfway work in the matter. The Testimonies are of the Spirit of God, or of the devil” (T4, p. 230).
She explains that her very words are inspired by the Spirit of the Lord and his holy angels.
“Although I am as dependent upon the Spirit of the Lord in writing my views as I am in receiving them, yet the words I employ in describing what I have seen are my own, unless they be those spoken to me by an angel, which I always enclose in marks of quotation” (SM1, p. 37).
Ellen says that every idea she writes as a testimony is from God.
“In these letters which I write, in the testimonies I bear, I am presenting to you that which the Lord has presented to me. I do not write one article in the paper expressing merely my own ideas” (T5, p. 67).
In view of Ellen’s challenge to us, it should be very clear whether what she wrote was from God. Most of the materials on this website are the result of our diligent effort to investigate whether this is so.
Both the Bible and Ellen’s Testimonies encourage us to put her prophecies to the test. Ellen taught that both her visions and writings were inspired by God.
The Lord commands us to see whether this is so. To do otherwise would be to shirk our Christian duty.
May we all pray for wisdom and illumination as we seek to obey this command from the Lord.
